Building a Planet: From Disk Condensation to Magnetic Signatures.

Student Session • Planetary Science

With rapid advancements in telescope instrumentation, we are detecting more exoplanets than ever before. But prioritising what to look for requires looking inward at our own Solar System. The story of any rocky planet begins in the protoplanetary disk. Here, elements condense from gas into solid building blocks following different thermodynamic sequences mostly governed by the local pressure and temperature. Exactly where and when a planet accretes its material permanently locks in its bulk chemistry. This phenomenon can explain how different planets can emerge from the very same solar nebula with similar starting ingredients but ultimately have very contrasting outcomes. But chemistry only dictates half of a planet's fate. The other half is invisible. Star-planet interactions drive atmospheric retention and energy transfer, revealing hidden planetary properties that direct optical observations cannot yet see. We close on an open question: can these inferred chemical and magnetic parameters serve as a reliable proxy for finding another Earth, or are there other parameters in play? Pro tip: look up K2-18b beforehand.
